Tragic Death Of Zipper Foot Stalls Costume Design

April 6, 2009

There has been a very tragic death in a sewing room on Cypress, TX this week. A well-worn, much loved, and desperately needed zipper foot DIED! The death is being mourned by the costume designer who is constantly at the machine this week, having multiple costumes to finish. We have been given this obituary for the beloved family member:

A scratched and worn, but well-loved zipper foot departed this mortal life on Sunday evening. This tragedy is greatly mourned by all in the sewing room. The straight pins are bending with grief. The scissors refuse to cut. The measuring tape is curled up in pain! The button-hole foot is claiming it's made it last button hole. The bias tap foot, thinks some of the sewing feet are just a bit biased. Who knew the zipper foot was so important in life in the sewing room? The seam ripper is ripped apart with grief! The thread is all tied up in knots. The bobbins are tangled together to support each other in their hour of need. The light bulb on the sewing machine refuses to light up, he is so distraught! (Or maybe, he's just burned out!) The presser foot refuses to sew, claiming he has other pressing issues to deal with. Even the iron has run out of steam!! Oh the drama of it all....to say nothing regarding the costume designer who is left high and dry to finish these costumes.

Funeral services will be held once the designer finds a replacement foot.....and no, I am not uncompassionate in feeling grief at this monumental death in the sewing room, but I do have to find a replacement quick! I've had a wonderful relationship with that little metal zipper foot. We have made many a costume, outfits, and pajamas pants together. I will greatly miss him. Hopefully, I can get another one without to much trouble. Who knows, they say they can't get machine parts for my machine anymore....let's just pray they still have zipper feet! We became very good at working together over the years....I don't even really know how old he was. He didn't have to just fall apart at the neck though! That makes it a bit difficult to put two metal pieces back together. There must be some unknown reason for the sudden death. Maybe he had enemies in the sewing room....maybe he felt to overworked these past few months....maybe he wasn't happy with his retirement options...maybe it was just his time to go to the great sewing room in the sky! Maybe the tulle tried to put rank on him, or the mending pile was just to much for him to look at...there are several zippers to be replaced in that pile. The rick rack is having it's ups and downs...the zippers have lost their zip, and the velcro is barely holding together. Maybe the thought of sewing things for my Grammie Box was just to overwhelming for the poor little guy. Come to think of it, he has probably sewn thousands of zippers during his little life...maybe he just gave his last stitch! At any rate, this costume designer will be looking for just the right little box to bury the broken pieces in....it has to be the perfect box. And who knows where we will bury it, our grief is to extensive to make those decisions at the moment! We do know that we will use the walking foot to carry the little guy to his final resting place. And the rolled hem feet can roll the dirt over the coffin. The button foot can hold the headstone in place while the hammer for the button cutter pounds it in place. Then after the final goodbyes, we can all grab on to the cording and follow it back to the sewing room to grieve in privacy!

Little Zipper foot is survived by all his loved ones in the sewing room.

SO: Some of us have to get over our grief and find a new zipper foot TOMORROW!
