How Do You Work A Serger?

January 26, 2009

OK, I bought a serger over a year ago, and finally had time to take it out of the box today! I know, I really need to get myself organized so I can play with my new toys.

So it took me over an hour to figure out how to thread 2 of the 4 threads. I'm not a dummy when it comes to sewing machines, but a serger I discovered that you have to use tweezers to reach some of the places you have to thread the thing. And getting the thread through two needles is still another challenge.

I almost forgot to get Cymbre because I was trying to thread the machine by watching the DVD that came with it. I am never going to take the threads out, just tie the new color on and pull it through by undoing the tension.

Speaking of tension....oh my goodness! I have been playing with those 4 knobs for 2 HOURS! I just can't get it right....just when I think I have the top two threads right, I turn it over and the bottom two are messed up! Everyone says it takes a while, but I was hoping to use this new toy to work on Cooper's dance costume tonight....however, I may just resort to my old faithful machine.

I actually think someone is out to get me!

Jump Dance Convention

January 24, 2009

The girls attended another dance convention, here in Houston. The Jump Convention. We have never been to this one. It was really fun for them. Cymbre came home with a hurt knee, and Cooper's feet were pretty beat up!

Cooper's feet at the end of the convention....she had to dance on carpet and a tile floor. Not good for dancer's feet!

Cymbre doing "Footloose" in jazz class.

Cooper in the white (well it's really light green, and black shorts in the middle of the photo)

More Cooper.

Cymbre in ballet class.
They had a GREAT TIME and learned a lot of new things....they are looking forward to the DVD from all the classes that will arrive in the next few weeks.

Tap University, North Carolina

January 18, 2009

Here's the girls with Mark Goodman at the end of their private lesson. He taught them some new steps, and how to slide. Then he told them the next time he sees them he wants to see how good they are with what he taught them. I have no doubt that he will ask them.

In acapella class, Cooper.

In Latin tap class, Cymbre.

Baby Jack's Outfit

January 26, 2009

Here's the blessing outfit for our Baby Jack....the blanket is his Dad's from when his Dad was blessed. The booties and outfit are new. Grammie Flanagan made the little outfit, and we bought the booties. It's going in Grammie's suitcase to the blessing!

Mouse Musings!

January 23, 2009

I FINALLY have the ironing all caught up....at least until I finish doing the laundry!! It must be some kind of miracle!!!

Baby Jack's blessing outfit is half done, but I bled on it when I stuck my finger with a pin, so I had to wash the thing. Then I got sidetracked doing other things, so it still isn't done. Maybe on Sunday afternoon.

In the morning the girls and I are going to attend another dance convention, but here in Houston this time....they are excited as there is a new Master Tap teacher we haven't met coming and they get to go to his class.

Cooper was invited to attend two more conventions when we were in North Carolina, so we will see what happens tomorrow.

This has been a kind of slow week here at home....the girls are recovering from the ear infections, school is somewhat calm, and dance has just been the usual. Their recital costumes are beginning to come home, so that will mean some alterations. Hopefully, not much though. I really don't like to alter things. It's much easier to start from scratch than pick everything apart and put it back together.

Dad is playing hunt down the mice in the garage...actually, he thinks it may be rats or something about that size. Whatever it is, he has declared all out war out there. There is poison bait, ultrasonic sound devices, and sticky traps.

Of course everything in the garage is a mess because of where those dumb things have chewed up things.....can you imagine how thirsty you would have to be to chew thru a plastic old motor oil container? What kind of mouse would go for that instead of the half of the water storage container they haven't already ruined? And the real clincher, the gas can full of gasoline for the lawn mower....that's a real mess when it leaks everywhere! Dad was livid.

I've been thinking about mice and what they eat....they chewed up the corners of the fabric boxes, but only chewed holes in the white material. Guess they don't like colors. I think they are pretty dumb to chew a hole in the box, and then only eat one color of material. I will have to cut around the little holes that are in every part of the corner that the fabric was folded.

When they chewed up the water storage containers, they leaked on several fabric boxes, and that stained the material inside....so I have been washing everything to get the water stains out of it. I think Dad is going to bring all my fabric in the house and put it upstairs in Shyla's old room. We've kind of turned it into a storage room, and there really isn't that much fabric left out there.

Just what could those mice have been thinking? Did they think we had a smorgasbord hidden away in those boxes, with the drinks stored just below? Surely they weren't dumb enough to think that we invited them to dinner! Why do they have to come in at the back of the garage behind stuff, and then eat stuff clear on the other side of the garage? And what would prompt them to drink the dirty motor oil. If I was a mouse, I certainly wouldn't drink something dirty when there was nice clean water just on the other side of the garage! They got into the water softener salt....bet that caused them to be thirsty. Maybe that's when they went for the gasoline. Did they think it wouldn't kill them? I mean, give me a break! Dad had to try to pour the gasoline in the van, which spilled down the side of the van and all over his arm. Otherwise it was just going to leak out all over the garage, and that was a big enough mess with the oil going everywhere. Needless to say, Dad is not having a good week.

Thank goodness, we don't have any of the home storage food out there...it's too hot.

Dad just reorganized all the holiday decorations, so we are hoping that those critters are not planning a strike on all those new buckets we just bought. If I find a dead mouse in the with Christmas stuff, no one will be happy around here.

I told Dad, we have to open all the fabric boxes BEFORE they come in the house, as I don't want a mouse hitch hiking a ride upstairs. Can you imagine how bad the girls would FLIP OUT if a mouse was in the dance room? It wouldn't matter if it was just trying to tap with them, they would beat the thing to a pulp, while they were screaming for DAD!

We got some great photos and videos in North Carolina, but haven't gotten them out of the camera yet....that thing seems to like to keep them! Maybe after this weekend there will be time to retrieve them.

Dad is suffering from a kidney stone, at least that's what the doctor thinks. Some days he is fine, and others he is in a lot of pain. Everyone say your prayers that it passes quickly.

Well, must run....I think since the girls are both a friends homes tonight, I will go fill up the tub and sit in the bubbles for a while.

Everyone remember to do something kind for someone else....you won't have to look very hard to find something to do. It just takes a few moments.

Remember we love you very much.

Off For More Adventures!

January 16, 2009

Well, we are off for more dance adventures! Dad will be home to hold down the fort while the girls and I are off in North Carolina tap dancing. AND, we get to see TP!!! That's more exciting than dancing to me!

I don't like to travel without Dad....I've decided that I just like him to take my hand and say let's go this way. I don't like to have to figure out where to go to rent the car, how to get to the hotel, how to get to the dance place.....I just like Dad to take care of me. He has certainly spoiled me.

And yes, after 30 years, I can admit that I like it. I have earned the right. And I am going to take advantage of that right one of these first days, and just go somewhere with Dad. Guess it just boils down to I like Dad....he's kinda cute in a gray, balding sort of way! And my hand fits perfectly in his, and his shoulder is kinda molded to my head, and he does my ice! So, YES, I am keeping him.

Say your prayers....both the girls have ear infections, but are on medicine....this flight should be fun! Cymbre had her shot, but Cooper's just started last night so the shot wouldn't have time to work in just 4 hours today. Dr. Ermac gave her some things to do on the plane to help with pain, and I have a purse full of tylenol, and numbing ear drops.

So no new blogs at least until Monday when we get home....I am not taking that laptop with me.

Everyone have a great weekend....bake some treats and take them to someone who is having a bad day....give them an extra hug!

Love you.

Costume Creations Maybe?

January, 13, 2009

Today I have spent a great deal of time cutting out costumes. It's Cooper's Stand Out solo costume. There must be 15 yeards of that TULLE stuff that I hate! Five layers of colors, times 4 layers of each color in varying lengths. Why I ever let her talk me into this is purely beyond my comprehension. I must have been drugged! Then she wants Christmas balls for buttons, and there are Aqua feathers for the hat....she will really STAND OUT!

Also spent some time cutting out the blessing outfit for Baby Jack. I think I will try to get that tulle wrestled into submission in the morning, and then move on to the baby outfit.

When the girls get home, we have to pack our suitcases to be ready to go to Raleigh, North Carolina on Friday.

Went to lunch with Elizabeth Brown today, and had a great time. We didn't go to Wendy's since that is where we would take Ethan, but we went to Candelaris instead. We had the pizza buffet and salad. Had a good long visit, which was good for Elizabeth. She wanted to talk about Ethan, his headstone, going through his stuff, and why she still feels such a loss.....can't imagine. He has only been gone about 6 weeks.

Dad was in Stavanger, but is on his way to London. He will call again in the morning....he is going somewhere else, but I don't remember where. He will come home on Saturday, and the girls and I will be home on Monday. Hopefully, Dad will be able to find the car at the airport...he left me a map of where to park it.

The ironing basket has been trying to get my attention lately....it's overflowing AGAIN. That's a constant problem at my house.....I even gave it a corner in the bedroom all it's very own....it has it's own big basket, but yet again it is spilling over the top.

Just what is it about ironing that is so distastful? Could it be the totally cotton wrinkled business shirts of Dad's? (He irons them more than I do lately) Maybe it's just the thought of standing on this dumb foot that just turns me off, or maybe the time missed sewing fun things. Maybe I just need a good chick flick on TV so I will spend the two hours ironing away. Or maybe we need to improve the clothes to the point that they never need ironing!

Today I overheard Dad's business shirts flirting with my lacy blouse...can you imagine? They were making plans for a date, but I think they have forgotten that they need to be worn on a body to go anywhere. And, Dad isn't here to wear his part.

Then Cooper's skirts were raising a ruckus because Dad's pants were squishing them...give me a break, do Dad's pants weigh a ton? I don't think so. Cymbre's poor jackets were totally at the bottom of the pile....talk about wrinkles. I will really have to use some steam there.

And those Christmas linen napkins...who knew that they would try to tell all the other ironing they are the most special pieces just because they go with Mom's Christmas Spode dishes. My goodness, aren't they humble?

The Thanksgiving tablecloth just wants everyone to be quiet so it can rest up for next year. I think it figures that it will still be in the ironing when it's time to come out for a visit again. That's a real possibility around here.

I may have to break down and iron some of my long pants, it's kind of cold down here lately...they probably have some complaint since they have been in that basket for months. Maybe they will want a retirement clause written into their contract!

The poor basket is probably having back problems. It's so overstuffed and overflowing that I have to lean it up against the bookshelf, and the wall....I can only imagine what's it's doctor would tell me. Talk about muscle strain! The little spiny things on the side of the basket are bulging too....can't imagine what surgery would cost to fix all of them. Probably not worth it, as it would probably not work any better than my toe! Are there really doctors for laundry baskets?

Well, I am not going to make a resolution to always have my ironing done....I think only boring women have the ironing done. I would rather sew than iron any day.

Well, enough of this foolishness for tonight. I must go take a bath, and try to sleep for a bit tonight. Maybe I can since it's the third night Dad has been gone...CNN here I come.

All of you remember to talk to your Heavenly Father, and also remember that your parents love you very much.

Share your smile with someone...

Love.

Cooper's Sewing Lesson

January 8, 2009

Here's Cooper's sewing lesson over the Christmas holidays. Cooper has done some sewing previously, so she decided to try to make a purse. We had a little confusion with the piping, which was Mom's fault ( I always have trouble with that dumb stuff!) But in the end, she is delighted with her finished product.

Cutting out, not Cooper's favorite part....she's like her Mom.

The body of the purse is finished.

Making the lining.

Inserting the cording to make the handle.

Done!
Now we are on to choosing what to make next....Cymbre may be making this pile of pillowcases that need making, and Cooper is still deciding.

Cymbre's Sewing Lesson

January 8, 2009

Cymbre and Cooper got sewing machines for Christmas....Mom is excited! They wanted to make something during the holidays, so here's what Cymbre made. It's an apron to wear when she helps in the kitchen. She has taken it to school and everywhere to show off. I guess she is excited too!

Cutting out....Mom's least favorite job!

How it should go together....

Finally sewing, after several attempts on scraps!

Modeling the finished product...a proud smile too!

The finished apron! Just two afternoons.
